Taiwanese GlobalWafers recently announced its plan to enter into a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with GlobalFoundries to jointly expand manufacturing capacity of 300mm SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) wafers, the Central News Agency reported on February 24. GlobalWafers is already supplying 200mm SOI wafers to GF. 300mm SOI wafers will be churned out to tap growing demand for RF SOI technologies which guarantee lower power, high performance, and high scalability solutions to support new-generation mobile and 5G applications. Production value of the Taiwanese foundry industry is estimated to have reached US$ 37.1 billion in 2019, down 4.6% compared to 2018, according to MIC (Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute), a government think tank and IT research institute in Taiwan.
